Basile and Baird

Eligibility Requirements

• Police Officer candidates must be 21 years of age and must have received a High School Diploma or GED.

• 60 Credit Hours from a college or university.  If we send you to the academy, you will receive 37 credit hours from attending.

These can be counted toward the 60-hour requirement.

• Candidates must be eligible to receive a Colorado driver’s license.

• Candidates must not have any disqualifying behaviors

• Candidates must either possess a current Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification or be eligible for one.  Candidates without a current POST certification can obtain one in two ways.  If you have prior law enforcement experience in another state or from a federal agency, you may be eligible to be provisionally certified in Colorado.  If you don’t have prior qualifying experience in another state, don’t worry – we will send you to the academy and you will graduate with your certification.

Eligibility questions for Colorado POST certification for out-of-state applicants with prior police training from another jurisdiction are best answered

by POST at POST@state.co.us or 303-866-5692 or visit  POST

 Hiring Process

Police Officer candidates must successfully complete the department’s hiring process.

After the initial online application, candidates will complete the following steps.  We will attempt to limit the number of times an out of state candidate has to travel to Colorado by combining several steps into one trip.

Phone Screen Interview (very basic interview to confirm eligibility)

Oral Board Interview (in person for in state candidates/flexible for out of state)

Ride along with department member (immediately after in person interview or upon arrival to town)

Candidates who are successful to this point will receive a conditional offer of employment.  The employment offer is conditional on the successful completion of the remainder of the process listed below.

Physical Examination and Drug Screen

Polygraph Examination

Psychological Examination

Background Investigation

Candidates who are successful to this point in the process will receive a final confirmation of employment offer.  Candidates who need to attend the academy will be given a start date (usually approximately a week before the start of the academy).  Candidates already certified, will be given a start date to begin the training program for a Breckenridge Police Department patrol officer.
