How to get a question on the ballot

Initiative is a process whereby voters may propose a new ordinance by placing their proposed ordinance on the ballot for a vote of the registered electors of the Town at a regular or special election.

The initiative process involves gathering a specified number of signatures of registered voters on petition forms. In Breckenridge, the number of signatures required is equal to 15 percent of the registered voters at the last municipal election.

If the petition is deemed sufficient, the ordinance is then referred to the Town Council who may either adopt the ordinance or refer it to a vote of the electors.
