The Breckenridge Police Department houses property and evidence for the Town of Breckenridge. These pieces of property include found property, evidence items, and other property turned over to the Breckenridge Police Department for safekeeping and proper disposal. The Breckenridge Police Department employs bar coding technology to help ensure a proper chain of custody and accurate storage and retention. Securing all property and evidence is accomplished with strict adherence to accepted policy and practices, as well as local, state and federal regulations.

Picking Up Property

Property releases are available on Mondays and Wednesdays between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm or at other times by appointment. We recommend making an appointment to make sure the property or evidence is ready for release.

To make an appointment, you can call 970-453-2941 and ask to speak with a detective or evidence custodian. When you call, please provide your name and case number to help make the process quicker. If you are from out of the state, or have special circumstances, we may be able to accommodate special requests as appropriate on a case by case basis.

All property releases will require valid identification. Firearms releases will require a check for warrants and protection orders to ensure compliance with local, state, federal firearms laws.

Retention and Release

Property which is turned into the Breckenridge Police Department will be disposed of in accordance with the Breckenridge Town Code (Title 1, Chapter 17) and Colorado law .

Found and unclaimed property that is reusable, such as bicycles, skis, cameras, etc., are sent to auction. All property that remains unclaimed or abandoned will be appropriately disposed of after 90 days if not claimed by the owner. Tips to Help Identify or Recover Lost or Stolen Property:

• Please keep track and record the serial numbers from your property. In the event your property should become lost or stolen, your property has a better chance of recovery if the serial number is known.
• Register your items with local or state agencies that participate in registration programs.
