The Swan River Restoration Project:  The goal of the Swan River Restoration Project is to reconnect the North, Middle, and South Forks of the Swan River by restoring approximately 12,200 linear feet of stream channel, the adjacent riparian upland areas. The existing site conditions are comprised of a highly disturbed aquatic and riparian upland environment. It is heavily impacted by historic mining activities that dredged the valley bottom, and obliterated the channel of the Swan River.

The Nature Conservancy Project: Breckenridge Open Space & Trails is partnering with The Nature Conservancy and Summit County Open Space to launch a new forest health project with the goal to protect neighborhoods from high-severity wildfires, and increase tree diversity in forest habitats. We are currently testing the potential for increases in aspen trees to act as natural fuel breaks for wildfire at the 46-acre Barney Ford Open Space site. Since aspens are less flammable and have a higher moisture content than conifers, they may act to reduce fire severity. Adding more aspen in forests also has wildlife benefits, as it increases insect and plant biodiversity, and creates valuable habitat for elk, moose, and deer.

The Reiling Dredge Stabilization Project: Built in 1908, the Reiling Gold Dredge was the eighth dredge used to mine gold in the Breckenridge area. The Reiling Dredge moved up and down French Creek extracting gold from the bedrock until 1922, when it sank in a small pond in French Gulch. With funding from the State Historical Fund, the Town of Breckenridge Open Space Division, Summit County Government, and the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance stabilized portions of the dredge deck and superstructure in 2018. The project consisted of repairing portions of the dredge deck, bracing and repairing the standing columns at the stern, bracing/strengthening the standing columns at mid ship, and re-erecting the starboard ladder.

The Mineral Hill Hiking Trail: In 2020, the Town of Breckenridge and Summit County Open Space constructed a new, hiking only trail, conveniently located across from the B&B Trailhead. This unique one mile hiking trail offers close up views of the Wellington Ore Bin, which was recently restored. Hikers are rewarded with a scenic overlook of French Gulch and the Ten Mile Range. In 2022, the Town of Breckenridge and Summit County plan to extend this trail, via the Backdoor Trail, to reach the top of Mineral Hill.
