Defensible space is an area around a structure where fuels are treated and maintained in a manner intended to increase the probability of structure survivability and provide a zone where fire suppression crews can operate to defend the structure. It is designed to reduce the potential risk to lives and property but will not prevent the occurrence of wildfires nor ensure structure survival.

Defensible Space

The Voluntary Defensible Space Ordinance was approved August 26, 2009. In general, property owners have the option to create defensible space. The Red White & Blue Fire Protection District administers the program on behalf of the Town. If a property owner is interested in having his or her property assessed for defensible space, please contact the Community Development Department at (970) 453-3160 or the Red White & Blue Fire District at (970) 453-2474.

See Section 9-1-19-22A and 9-1-19-22R of the Breckenridge Town Code for detailed information on landscaping and firewise requirements.
